Goal of the week 13/03/12 – 19/03/12

So we’ve seen another week of great goals from around the world, but it’s been a week overshadowed by the tragic events surrounding the cardiac arrest of Fabrice Muamba at White Heart Lane. Like everyone else, my thoughts are with him and his family at this time, willing him to pull through.

Like last time, I’ve picked the top 5 from the goals that I’ve come across. Of course, I’m bound to have missed some real screamers, so if that’s that case, don’t be afraid to let me know if they’re worth noting.

Okay, here we go:

A. Papiss Cisse vs. Norwich City – Cisse continues to show Toon fans why the club invested near enough £10million for him with another explosive finish at the Leazes end at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon. The Senegalese’s 3rd goal in the black and white saw him thunder home a half volley with the outside of his right foot into the roof of John Ruddy’s net. (Can only find an external link for the goal opposed to an embedded YouTube clip)

B. Oscar Cardozo vs. Beria-Mar – This goal is mainly for the assist – although Cardozo shows a cool head to put the ball in the net. A swift counter attack from Benfica sees the ball break to Nelson Oliveira, who in turn calmly back-heels the ball, catching the defence off guard, into the path of Cardozo to slot home. If not goal of the week, surely assist? (start video at 1:45 for the goal)

C. Fernando Llorente vs. Manchester United – Llorente’s fantastic volley against Man Utd was as important as it was impressive. Watching the ball travel all of about 70 yards, Llorente coolly thumps the ball passed David de Gea in the United goal, and gave Bilbao a strangle hold on the tie.

D. Zoran Tosic vs. Real Madrid – Okay, so Tosic’s strike Madrid was purely a consolation goal with his side 3-0 down, but what a strike it was. The former Man United player skins Pepe, before calmly shifting it back onto his left hand side and smashing one off the under side of Iker Casillas’s crossbar.

E. Shefki Kuqi vs. Rochdale – There’s not a lot I can say about this goal other than ‘Wow!’. The journeyman Finn unleashes a howitzer of a looping volley from around 40 yards out, leaving the Rochdale keeper with no chance at all. Fair to say he’s still got it.

UPDATE!

A late entry courtesy of Dan Knight who sent me this link on Twitter – multiple votes allowed this week due to the late arrival.

F. Dalibor Veselinovic vs. Gent – I think this is one you just have to see for yourself! Wow!

Special mentions also go to Steven Gerrard, Antonio Valencia and Ben Marshall, who all which easily could have made the list. Vote and comment on who you think was goal of the week, and i’ll announce the winner on Friday!

You’ve seen the best goals, but how about the most ridiculous? Check Jake Harrison‘s take on the weeks scrappiest goals. If nothing else, they might make you smile.

    1. Yeah, the more I see Marshall’s strike, the better it gets! Really was close to getting in on the poll, but only just lost out to Zoran Tosic’s strike for a place on the ballot. Kuqi’s strike wasn’t half bad though…

  1. Some great goals this week loving the late arrival, However, the omission of Torres header should of be included ‘just in case’

      1. For importance Torres’ goal deserves a mention, but I just don’t think it could be classed as a goal of the week contender. Happy to see Nando back among the goals, though!

Tell me what you think...
